I picked your review first, for something (can't tell you what now, to save my life!)caught my eye.

I did see your ehtnicity, and the other labels you mentioned. I suppose we all bring with us a sense of pride (or shame, sometimes) when it comes to creating an unbiased review. I guess most people would like to know before they read, about the author, for that can even influence one's opinion of the review. Two-way street, huh?

I do agree with you regarding the portrayal of the spartan "look" vs. the persian grotesqueness. That's kinda hard to miss! I do agree that as far as femininity, the spartan men are definitely not in touch with their feminine sides. The movie makes it quite clear what spartan men are born and bred to do. Xerxes is portrayed as persian men typically were...Cleopatra did not have a monopoly on kohl eyeliner...the men wore it also. I think they simply found it attrative against their caramel skin...it's a kick ass look. Not necessarliy feminine, any more than you would say Mick Jagger is for wearing eye liner. That was their style, sister.
As for how the 300 were able to do so well...they had help. And they did lose. They killed more because they were brutal, "kill by any means", types of dudes. Again, the movie made that quite clear...many spartan youth did not survive their rite of passage...this was simply the culling of the herd. They were a figting culture. We've only just now allowed women to fight in battles, so it's not a huge stretch to think that if a society is based on fighting, women would take a backseat. I'm sure behind every great spartan leader in bed, there was a woman whispering strategic plans...perhaps even sharing ideas. They weren't just breeders...but you are right, they didn't have near the power that roman women would have, much later.

Thanks again for your input.
www.myspace.com/shamrockrchick

Wow i did not know he was korean! but still can't ...

Wow i did not know he was korean! but still can't wait to see the movie!

Hey, you make some good points. i have to be willing to hear theirs and explain my own.

my mom's parents moved to the US from iran in the fifties, and she was born soon after. and, like most immigrant families in the fifties, they put a lot of energy into assimilating. trying to strip away some of that whitewashing has become really important to me, though a much bigger task than i anticipated too. i left my last conversation with my mother just astounded, finding out that my mom considers herlself to be white, and hearing stories about my grandmother explaining that persians are white because they are different from arabs.

anyway, i'm rambling, but there is just so much to unpack, and it's reassuring to see someone else who's trying to do it too. i mean conversations about privilege, race, class, gender, et al. can be difficult enough, but you bring family in and it's just downright emotional. for me, at least, i can swallow interacting with people in the world who don't get it, but when i'm with my family, it's much harder to take if i hear a sexist or racist comment, because there's so much investment there. and of course, i want to share myself with them-- which includes my academia and my activism-- which means trudging through the same topics.

and i'm back to rambling. the point was, it sounds like you're doing an amazing job at being loving and kind to your family while tackling these issues, and that's amazing. and thanks, again, for sharing.

Hi! Found it through belledame.

A lot in the post really rings true for me, but in my case the racism of unrecognised degrees was mitigated somewhat by their eventual recognition and my parents' hard work to climb into middle-class stability.

Often I feel that the elitism of 1st-gen immigrant parents comes from the tough circumstances they face, both in their adopted country and back home. China and India are the two most populous countries in the world, and living and working there, even from a middle-class background, is hard. Privilege always comes at someone else's expense -- the racism/elitism/classism of immigrant families is nothing special in economic terms.

But I also think that's only part of the reason that immigrant families don't engage politically with the race oppression we face. I think the other part is the isolation of immigration makes it really hard to connect to political struggles in the adopted country. Challenging racism also exposes you to challenges about the legitimacy of your being here, which is tough for someone with the responsibility of taking care of others.

Hollywood hypocrisy indeed.

Thank you Rebec...

Hollywood hypocrisy indeed.

Thank you Rebecca for pointing out the occupation of Palestine by Israel.

In terms of people who are not paying enough attention to the racism and genocide in Palestine, I would agree that this issue has not been connected to other human rights violations. The mainstream media has certainly been biased on this issue as well.

However, I would refrain from stating that one situation is worse than another. While it is true that the forms of human rights violations in Tibet and Palestine differ, we should not compare one situation to another as better or worse. While human rights violations exist in different forms in these two places, we should also draw similarities of the occupation that has to do with the general culture of colonization.

I say this because so many resistance movements only organize around one issue instead of forming coalitions and alliances around all issues of oppressions. What I am trying to say is, while we are organizing on one resistance movement, we also need to acknowledge and recognize the struggles of other brothers and sisters around the globe. Especially since the media will only highlight a few places at a time. While we organize, we must not forget the people in other countries who are also in occupation, apartheid...etc.

Both Tibet and Palestine are under occupation. Both are facing de facto genocide, and both should be recognized. Unfortunately, this is not how it works in the media. The media usually favors one crisis over another, as if one could be totally disregarded.

What is important is that we have to connect the global struggles as a product of imperialism and colonization from a transnationalist perspective. We have to connect the dots that cause these injustices.

Domestic news in Korea says "Natural consequence"....

Domestic news in Korea says "Natural consequence"...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4C1gKjiUvOo

Wow, I'm so tired of this Hollywood hypocrisy!
...

Wow, I'm so tired of this Hollywood hypocrisy!

Israel is a brutally-racist Jim Crow apartheid. Palestinians have severely restricted rights and are treated like animals there. Far worse than Tibetans in China. And recently, an Israeli company forbid Chinese laborers from socializing with any Israeli women. The whole country is a human rights nightmare and has far less sovereign legitimacy than Tibet.

And yet no one here ever labels them a human rights abuser or fights for Palestinians freedom. Instead, they have been our leading recipient of foreign aid for half a century...

Is it just me or is our entire country simply strongly biased in favor of "persecuted" Jews and against "lowly Commie chinks?" Sorry about the lack of responses on this thread, Cynical.

I've been swamped with work and it just slipped my mind. Top that off with a 3 week trip through Shanghai and Taiwan, it just prolonged my ability to respond to this.

Suffice to say, while I do give you and Nate's argument some validity, there are also holes in them which I will put on my personal site.

I feel that this issue is such a big issue and the topic has been rehashed so many times that I've decided to compile every possible article, statistic, and opinion on it and put it all on one sole website so no one has to fish through the internet for them.

I feel that this topic needs to be talked about desperatly and my main goal is for it to be mindopening for all parties.

I'm going to include my own personal observations, opinions and insights from others, as well as responses from "sellouts" both real and imagined.

In order for the Asian American community to florish, this topic needs to be addressed and quickly because it has become a large barb in the side of Asian American unity. Asian women have to realize that they are joined at the hip with Asian men. If Asian men are being oppressed and denied their humanity, Asian women will shortly follow. We're each others' "ball and chain" and simply ignoring the other party is impossible.
